Female Rapper: Quintescence

Keeping The Movement Going

Some of the Rap songs made by male rappers today portray women as sexual objects. These songs may provide the male Rap artist with fame and dollars but they do nothing to uplift their fellow female rappers. As a female RAP artist, Quintescence has had her share of pressure to show that she has what it takes to go toe to toe with male Rap artists. As she continues to polish her skills and talent, given the time she’s bound to outshine them.

Rap music can be dated back to the 1970’s with one of the first rappers DJ Kool Herc. Over the years Rap music has changed and today there are so many different styles of Rap music to choose from. Quintescence has an unpredictable and unique style that comes at you like a bolt of lighting. Her Music style will energize the moment, the party and the audience. Quintescence Rap style is fresh and aggressive which makes it so powerful.

Everyone has that person in their life that is their biggest influence, that one special person that gives them the motivation to do what they do, for Quintescence that’s her grandmother. Quintescence has been influenced by her grandmother’s strength and that has helped to build her character. When speaking with Quintescence you can feel how important family is to her.
A creative mind can be like a flower garden if you give it what it needs it will bloom award-winning flowers. Creating a Rap song sometimes needs inspiration to bloom into a hard-hitting, booty shaking Rap song masterpiece. For Quintescence her inspiration comes from her life experiences, which gives her songs that unique flavor.

Someone told me that no matter what career path one takes there would always be the BS side of business, aka the business politics. If you’re not watchful it will wash over you like a tidal wave and drown you and your dreams. For Quintescence the politics of the business side has been one of her most challenges with her music career, however with her love and passion for music, this has kept her afloat.

There are those that sit on the sidelines and watch life pass them by as their dreams fade to black. However, this is not the case for Quintescence. She was a two-time Winner at The Apollo Theatre and awarded Best Female Rapper in 2003 by Under Ground Music as well as featured on over 100 blog sites. Next for the Diva of Rap, is to continue to grow and have the patience to do it BIG! This year Quintescence is up for Best Female Rap Artist and Song of the year by the Under Ground Music Awards. Coming our way soon is the release of her new music video for her hot single “New York Shit.”

To do your best and give your best one needs to recharge. When she’s not performing or composing, Quintescence recharges her batteries with good conversations, long walks through Central Park, chillin by pool and catching her favorite show Sex and the City. Born and raised in the Bronx of New York, this dynamic Rap artist dream of performing at Madison Square Gardens. With her determination I have no doubt that dream will become a reality.

MUSICAL ARTIST: AKSHAN

Second Life is an innovative platform where musicians can reach across the globe with their music either through a SL DJ or performing live in-world. For performer and songwriter Akshan he’s read articles about SL but hasn't visited the 3D virtual world yet. I invited him to teleport in and check it out. Who knows one day your avatar maybe be dropping it like its hot at Nappy Roots to Akshan single “Jealous Type” with the artist dancing right next to you.

His smile will charm you, for the ladies his voice will make your heart flutter and his music will touch your soul. It seems as if this artist was born to create and perform. For some, when you are a kid the world can be your oyster and the choices of what you want to do can be unlimited. For Akshan, music has always been and always will be apart of his life. Often when he travels back home the question will be asked “Are you still singing” and the answers is, yes since he was a young boy.

The creative process is different for everyone. In the beginning Akshan creative process begin with a beat that he liked, this would start his creative process for writing a song. As his talent has grown throughout the years so has his knowledge of what it takes to be a songwriter. His inspiration is life, for him everything that you see that’s around you is a part of you. Akshan can channel the vibe that he likes, his inspirations of life and music influences such as reggae musician Sizzla Kalonji, the harmony of R&B artists Boyz II Men and R. Kelly into his creative process, in his words “Putting feelings into music” and in my opinion you can hear that in each of his songs.

I asked Akshan If a genie appeared before him and she said she would grant him a wish for three venues to perform at what would they be. His first wish, he had to bring it home to DC at the Verizon Center. His second wish, which is kind of close to my heart being that it’s in my hometown, the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. His third wish, Hollywood baby the Kodak Theater. What do all of these venues have in common? They are all stadium entertainment complex that beams energy and since Akshan works off energy these three venues would be a perfect fit for the new artist.

Akshan plans for the future is by the end of the year to complete EP which he is working on with Arsonal that will feature his hot single “Jealous Type” as well as several tracks produced by Arsonal “Island Rocker” and “Cali-fornicate” with vocals from songstress Laura Song. EP will also include “B-Keyz” by Brian Wilson from Veer Music Group and David Breed Productions. I hope EP will also include my favorite song by Akshan “February Soft.” Akshan told me it took him less than a few minutes to write the song and each time he sings it he feels as if he is giving a performance. Also, in the works is a music video for his hit single “Jealous Type” and of course I had to drop a hint or two for a possible Second Life virtual world music video.

When Akshan is not in the studio recording or performing at local venues such as DC9 Nightclub in Washington he likes to unwind with a game of golf and spend time with his family. If you haven't had the chance to hear his music you can sample his style at www.akshanmusic.com.

Model: La Shon

Not the typical model but fabulous none the less. La Shon is the 'Everyday woman' hell bent on reminding the world that ALL women are beautiful. It was on a whim that she posed for a photographer's class project. What got her serious is when someone messaged her about a bodypaint session. "Since that shoot, I've been trying to connect with serious companies that I can do commercial work with. I understand the industry doesn't believe I'm runway material & that's just a shame but I know I can do other work; I want the print ads, background acting, creative shoots, promotional events."

Even with set goals in mind, La Shon admits it hasn't been easy. "I'm Black, I'm short, I've got locs, & I'm healthy. But how funny is it that I'm almost certain my age is playing a factor. Companies won't be able to play games with me cause I'm not new to the industry or life. And don't get it twisted; I might be 31 but with the right hair style I look like I'm in high school so skip this age factor, I'm aging quite well."

Despite knowing some primary details of how cruel the industry is, La Shon continues to pursue work. She is listed with a few agencies for promotional work as a freelancer & has no thoughts of stopping now. The short she mentions is her 5'4" height that throws most people off, as she looks taller. "Its the legs, I've got long legs for my height," she says with a smile, "I'm a standard size 8 but I am coming out of hibernation. I've also learned that a woman's body can change from week to week. If I wore a size 8 last week, this week I could be pushing a 10 from bloating. So disturbing!"

If you would like to book this witty lady she is available for promotions, fashion, video, voice, & print work and can be reached by e-mail, model@lashon.org.

The Journey: A DJ’s Perspective

A DJ Gig should be a journey in music, spontaneous and passionate, filled with surprises at every turn. It shall have an intimate connection between the DJ and its audience filled with emotion as each song begins to play. It shall allow the audience inside the world of that DJ as well as draw something out of that audience member similar to a love making scene and any other intimate exchange. The element of surprise is a critical part of this connection that the “request” tends to compromise. Relax and go on an intimate journey with your DJ.
